Abstract

It is easy enough for a school (or any institution for that matter) to write in policy or mission statements that staff value the Treaty of Waitangi. But words such as 'value' or 'honour' are readily recorded but seldom enacted. Clover Park Middle School has taken the implications of the Treaty of Waitangi seriously. Language, culture, identity, and mutual respect form the foundation of both policy and practice in this urban, low decile, multicultural school. The school's journey including difficulties and achievements is outlined with implications for all teachers who appreciate the powerful interplay between language, culture, and learning.
